THE CAST

K-Beauty OEM, ODM and OBM: who develops a cosmetic?

Understand the roles behind Korean cosmetics, from contract production to formula development and brand creation, without assuming that a shared factory means an identical product.

K-Beauty products can involve a brand owner, a development partner and a manufacturer. OEM, ODM and OBM describe different scopes of work in that relationship. They are useful industry terms, but they do not tell a shopper whether two finished cosmetics have the same formula.

Start with the service being supplied

OEM describes making a client’s product. COSMAX’s current service pages describe ODM as developing formulations, packaging and finished cosmetics, while OBM adds the creation of the brand and its presentation. These distinctions help identify the scope of a service; the responsibilities in a particular project still depend on the arrangement.

Separate the factory from the formula

Imagine two cream jars that name the same manufacturer. That detail identifies a participant in production. It does not establish the same ingredient quantities, texture, fragrance, packaging or testing. A price comparison based only on the manufacturer leaves the actual product specifications unanswered. Likewise, different brand names do not prove that every development step happened independently.

Use the distinction when asking questions

The practical benefit is a more precise question: who can confirm this product’s details? Use the label and seller listing together, and keep the manufacturing model separate from claims about authenticity, quality or value.
