THE CAST

Reading vegan and cruelty-free claims with a clear scope

Check who makes a claim, what it covers and whether it applies to the specific product you are comparing.

Write down the exact claim

A product page may discuss animal-derived ingredients, animal testing or a named certification. Read the precise wording rather than treating every leaf or rabbit illustration as the same assurance. Note whether the statement concerns one item, a product range or the whole brand.

If a certification is named, find the issuing organization's own explanation and current listing. A badge shown on a marketplace image can be difficult to date or associate with the exact product in your basket.

Check what the programme actually examines

Cruelty Free International describes an approval programme focused on animal testing, with supplier monitoring and independent auditing among its requirements. That scope should be read on its own terms; it does not answer every separate question about a product's ingredients or suitability.

For a vegan claim, ask how the brand defines it and whether the exact formula is covered. For an animal-testing claim, check the policy or certification scope. Do not infer either answer from the product's country of origin, a natural-looking package or the presence of one plant ingredient.

Keep a dated comparison

Save the claim, issuer, relevant product name and the date you checked. If a brand has changed ownership, packaging or formulation, use its current information rather than assuming an older article still describes the product offered today.

This approach lets you compare products according to your own priorities without creating a blanket ranking. Where a detail remains unclear, leave it as an open question and ask the brand. A precise, limited answer is more useful than an expansive label with no explained scope.
